Natural history is history, too! The Fluvanna Historical Society is happy to collaborate with the Piedmont Discovery Center in our second public walk featuring the remarkable narrative preserved in our wild native spaces.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join one of Virginia’s top botanists in the field! Join the Piedmont Discovery Center’s Drew Chaney, a leading expert in the flora and fauna of the Virginia Piedmont, in an exploration of natural history in the winter landscape. Participants will learn how field technicians use bark, buds, seed plumes, thatch, basal rosettes and other clues to identify grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees in winter. We will also explore the ecological importance of the imperiled ecosystems in which they occur. No question will go unanswered!
The Cold Hollow Piedmont Savanna remnant is a high-quality example of a pre-colonial time capsule – one of the best examples among the more than 800 old growth remnant grassland patches found during research conducted by the Piedmont Discovery Center in 2020-2022 in a 17-county area.
