Upcoming Vernal Pool Events

Experience the magic of vernal pools at night!

Join us for a guided exploration of these special places at Brook Hill River Park, hosted by Piedmont Discovery Center and Albemarle County Parks.  Come learn about the creatures that depend on vernal pools – including salamanders, frogs, invertebrates, and more!  In order to protect this sensitive habitat, we will take multiple groups of no more than 6 people to visit the pools.  Please note: There are no trails to the pools, so our walk will be over uneven and wet terrain.

RSVP required! Click here to RSVP.  More details will be provided over email for those who sign up.

Help protect creatures in the vernal pools!

The salamanders can use a helping hand – come join Albemarle County Parks and Piedmont Discovery Center to clean up at Brook Hill River Park!  Unfortunately, over the years a lot of trash has been dumped at the site of the vernal pools and the non-native multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) has become established. Meet at the boat landing parking lot.  Clean up will take place in the floodplain and near the vernal pools.  Expect wet, uneven terrain, thorns, ticks, etc.  Bring gloves, snacks and water and wear waterproof boots.  Trash bags, loppers, trash pickers and some extra gloves will be provided but feel free to bring your own.  Come help us clean up this special park!

RSVP appreciated but feel free to just come on out!  Click here to RSVP. Email reminder provided for those who sign up.
