Mary Cotterman
2025 Research Intern
I AM…
inquisitive, creative, passionate, conscientious, a hiker, forager, artist, hot springs aficionado, and a dirt lover.
I BELIEVE…
That we all belong to a greater socio-ecological community and that seeing and understanding the network of relationality we have always been embedded in helps us to be more responsible ecosystem members and enriches our lives.
BIO
Mary joined the PDC team as an intern for the 2025 research season. As part of the Piedmont Grasslands Assessment team, she helps locate old growth grassland remnants and collect the plant population data necessary for their recognition and protection. She also is a part of the ongoing biological surveys at Quarry Gardens at Schuyler.
Mary grew up in the forested mountains of Western North Carolina and the oak-studded hill country of Central Texas. After earning an undergraduate degree in studio art, she spent a decade as a ceramicist, exploring dynamics between culture and landscape in pottery. She graduated from University of Virginia with a Master’s in Landscape Architecture which she hopes to use to facilitate more intimate relationships between people and their local landscapes.
