Charlie Aller
Stewardship Manager, Facilities and Grounds

I AM…
imaginative, hopeful, learning, doubtful, engaged, considerate, respectful, and loving.

I BELIEVE…
we have a responsibility to learn how to care for the living world and its people: plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and many more – the unknown and unnamed beings that have come before us, and will be here after we are gone. My practice is meeting new organisms every day, accessing knowledge through scientific literature, listening to elders and their experiences, and giving grace to myself and others in this learning process. The living landscapes that Piedmont Discovery Center unveils, supports, and rebuilds inspire us in this work.

BIO
Charlie joined PDC in 2025 as a Stewardship Technician. He is an enthusiastic member of the Restoration Team, pulling weeds, planting plugs, imagining a better world, and pointing out every interesting fungus (and plant, and insect, and rock…) he sees. His skills in mycology, horticulture, and community-building have helped him connect with the experienced, dynamic, and care-driven team at PDC.

Charlie has a BS in Horticulture Science from Virginia Tech. He has spent the last 13 years studying mycology, co-founding Mush Luv with his partner, Nina O’Malley, and re-discovering love for all kinds of biology through a fungal orientation. He has taught workshops on mycology, helped organize the New Moon Mycology Summit, co-lead ecology tours in Greece, and co-facilitated a mushroom cultivation course in Oregon.
